The framework of this stupendous novel lies in the miracles of Jesus, as described in the Bible. Using the poetic dialectics, these miracles are turned into its own opposite, humorously and with deep empathy for the sufferings of mankind. Jesus healed a leprous woman, but nobody wants to accept her into society. thee blind man is healed, and now, being able to see the world with his own eyes, he is disgusted and gets his eyes out. Jesus healed a man who was deaf and mute, and who was afterwards crucified because he was telling what he honestly thought. Pekić pictures a multilayered portrait of the authoritarian ideologies and its imposed dogmatism, which thereby produces even bigger distress. Overzealous ideologies and intolerance have had many faces during the history, but their consequences were similarly disastrous.

One of the most popular books in reading circles, published in many editions, certainly deserves a new English edition. Biblical mythology is a symbolic background for the narrative canvass, which illustrates tragedy of individuals who try to lead an authentic life, not according to the ideological standards. Readers in our region are well acquainted with the totalitarism of the „Saviours“.
