Sadija, the grandmother of the main character of this novel, Mehmet Durak, has a seemingly odd wish which turns into the running joke of her family: she wants to be buried in Serbia. This is how she wants to come to terms with her origins and leave the ''red land'', which is how she symbolically calls the area where her immigrant family is now living in Turkey. Mehmet, wanting to escape from an unrequited love towards his neighbour Mirsada, agrees to fulfil his grandmother's wish. And thus Sadija will truly find her final resting place in Serbia and the main character of The Red Land will find a place to live in Srebrenica, where his family came from... Lidija Klemenčič has written a brave and ideologically impartial novel about one of the most painful episodes in recent Balkan history.
